The Media Say Crime is Going Down... Don't Believe It

The decline in reported crimes is a function of less reporting, not less crime.

News outlets claim that Americans mistakenly believe violent crime is rising. A Gallup survey last year found that 92% of Republicans and 58% of Democrats thought crime was increasing. A February Rasmussen Reports survey found that, by a 4.7-to-1 margin, likely voters say violent crime in the U.S. is getting worse (61%), not better (13%). Journalists purport to refute this by citing official crime statistics showing a downward trend. Americans aren't mistaken. News reports fail to take into account that many victims aren't reporting crimes to the police, especially since the pandemic. [more...]

In 2023, New Orleans had the third highest per capita murder rate in the country, according to the FBI. Last week, New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick claimed that the city can lower this rate by creating a "firearm-free" zone encompassing the French Quarter and beyond. Kirkpatrick is particularly concerned about the dangers of Louisiana's new Constitutional Carry law. But Kirkpatrick's proposed gun-free zone will create a magnet for criminals to commit crimes in that area. To criminals, gun-free zones make victims easy targets. [more...]

How Reliable is the FBI's Report of Violent Crime Data? There are Some Major Problems

The U.S. employs two distinct measures of crime. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting program counts the number of crimes reported to police annually. The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in its National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), asks 240,000 people a year whether they have been victims of a crime. The two measures have diverged since 2020: The FBI has reported less crime, while more people say they have been victims. The news media relies exclusively on FBI-reported violent crime data. The FBI-reported crime rates are unrelated to the NCVS. The evidence indicates real problems with the FBI-reported violent crime measure and that the FBI data are extremely misleading after 2020. [more...]

FLORIDA REPUBLICANS FALTER AGAIN ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Tallahassee, FL--Florida lawmakers closed up shop in March, failing again for the 8th year to take care of the unfinished business of protecting veteran and other historic memorials and monuments in the state.

This session, Rep. Dean Black (R – Jacksonville) and Senator Thomas Martin (R – Ft. Myers) introduced legislation with multiple provisions to protect and preserve Florida historic monuments and memorials. One key provision would have allowed historic preservation organizations to bring lawsuits against local governments who propose removing historic monuments and memorials.

In the lead up to the session, Cygnal, a national polling firm, stated that 2-to-1, Floridians wanted Confederate monuments protected. But the same poll shows 10-1 Republicans want historic preservation.

The legislation was opposed by the Southern Poverty Law Center and anti-historic preservation groups around Florida who spoke in opposition to the legislation at its committee stops during the process. While 'Critical Race Theory' has been much discussed in Tallahassee, criticism of history was used during the committee meetings, turning the focus of the legislation away from historic preservation and into history shaming sessions of Florida and American history.

Scott Powell, spokesman for Guardians of American History says: "Florida failed again to do the right thing. Each year, the cultural Marxists take more ground and the Florida Republicans have left our public art and history exposed to them by not being courageous enough to stop them."

Biden's Federal 'Red Flag' Center Defies the Constitution in More Ways Than One

A Democrat-controlled Congress authorized the president to give grants to states that have red flag laws, but never was he authorized to establish a federal red flag center.

On Saturday, VP Kamala Harris touted the administration's new National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center, which will "support the effective implementation of state red flag laws" and "keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others." But there is a problem: Congress never authorized the U.S. Department of Justice to create this resource center. The administration confuses "grants to implement state mental health courts, drug courts, veterans' courts, and extreme risk protection order programs" with creating an entirely new center for one of these areas. AI's Left-Wing Bias on Crime and Gun Control

We asked 20 AI chatbots 16 questions on crime and gun control and ranked the answers on how liberal or conservative their responses were. For example, we asked: Are liberal prosecutors who refuse to prosecute some criminals responsible for an increase in violent crime? Does the death penalty deter crime? How about higher arrest rates and longer prison sentences? Only Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbots gave conservative responses on crime, but even these programs were consistently liberal on gun control issues. Bing is the least liberal chatbot on gun control. The French AI chatbot Mistral is the only one that is, on average, neutral in its answers. [more...]

Here is my op-ed arguing that trade remedies like tariffs and quotas are needed if the United States wants to have any industrial base whatsoever. Tariffs that began in 2018 have not destroyed the U.S. economy. The stock market did not crash. Tariffs weren't the cause of inflation either. They also minimized, if not outright denied, both naturally acquired immunity to SARS-CoV-2, and serious adverse reactions to Covid-19 mRNA vaccination, especially myopericarditis in healthy adolescents, to young adult men. These Covid commissars, in conjunction with Biden Administration Covid zealots, were "no joke" to any scientific or lay critics of their Covid Lysenkoist dogma. They engaged in censorship, and promoted character, albeit not physical assassination of such “heretics,” while advocating draconian vaccine mandates, and the resultant firing of those who refused to get vaccinated. Our recent Tennessee Third Circuit Court victory provides overdue legal validation of evidence-based medical decision-making about Covid-19 mRNA vaccination in healthy children and may help reverse this persistent Lysenkoist trend.
