Public Worry over Remote Threats
By Ivan Eland
The breathless news coverage of the miniscule number of
people in the United States that have so far contracted the Ebola virus has led
to a typical irrational response in some quarters. For example, schools have
been closed, and the public and thus some politicians support a travel ban of
people from the affected West African countries, even though health
professionals have said that this "solution" might make things worse.
Despite such professionals repeating often that Ebola is inefficiently
transmitted, that West Africa has a much lower level of general health care
than does the United States, and that therefore the American problem is likely
to be only contagion among the health workers tending to the very small number
of victims rather than in the general population, many people are still nervous
that they or their family will catch the virus. [more...]
Ebola
Could Be Economic Catastrophe
The
medical implications of Ebola are being covered by the news media every second
of every day. But it's the economic implications that I fear are far more
deadly. Ebola could turn into an unprecedented deathblow to the U.S. economy,
even if very few Americans ever die from it. I might have been the first
columnist to write of the danger for Ebola to cause catastrophic damage to the
U.S. economy back on September 4th, predicting it could shut
down commerce and cause a stock market crash. [more...]
Ebola, Obamacare, and the Freedom of Living in Peace
and Security
As
I discuss in my new book, Renewing America and Its Heritage of
Freedom: What Freedom-Loving Americans Can Do to Help, there are 25
essential components of freedom necessary to have a completely free
nation. One of the 25 essential components is the freedom of living in peace
and security. Americans are not living in peace and security today,
knowing that several major diseases might infect themselves and their family
members, as well as knowing that their healthcare insurance premiums,
co-payments, access to doctors and hospitals, and the availability of
medications, procedures, and protocols are all threatened by Obamacare. [more...]
Obama Really Did Appoint a Political Beneficiary - Not a
Doctor - as Ebola Czar
In
the past, the White House had said a czar was not necessary, but now they
have retracted that statement after being criticized that U.S. hospitals are
not equipped to handle an epidemic such as this. The U.S. government has failed
again and again to properly assess this situation and to make
adequate and effective decisions that produce positive results in regards to
the Ebola epidemic overseas. Obama appears to be a casual observer
and a good talker whose lack of action speaks volumes louder than his words for
educated individuals. The man says the U.S. does not need an Ebola czar; but
now that he has been forced to do his research, he is finally facing the
facts and has finally caved in to the pressure by naming a political
supporter of his as the Ebola czar. [more...]
