As
Hillary Clinton announces a plan to overhaul America’s criminal justice system
- a system she says is failing and wrongfully imprisoning many young Americans
- she may find a powerful ally in Former NYC Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik
whose new book, From Jailer to Jailed: My
Journey from Correction and Police Commissioner to Inmate,
exposes the corruption and judicial overreach in America’s criminal justice
system. Already a bestseller, Kerik, a hero for his work on 9/11, reveals the
inside story of America’s justice system and prisons.
Kerik
on Clinton: "As one of the 2016 presidential candidates, Secretary Clinton
should be commended for having the courage to stand up and speak out for
criminal justice reform. Our criminal justice system as it stands today is in
dire need of repair. The mentally ill
and addicted need treatment, not prison. The mandatory minimums and sentencing
guidelines need to be addressed. First-time nonviolent drug and white-collar
offenders should not be doomed to failure for life, with the cloud of their
mistake hanging over them internally.
"The
criminal justice system as it stands today is creating a permanent underclass of
American citizen in the millions costing the American taxpayers tens of
billions over the reported cost of incarceration. Mrs. Clinton's address
touches on some of these issues. Let's just hope the other presidential
candidates can put aside their fears of appearing soft on crime, and have the
same courage as Mrs. Clinton to address mass incarceration and warehousing of
human beings - one of the most devastating civil rights issues of our
time."
