Can Islam Be Reformed?

It is an often-repeated view that Muslims must be violent to be true to their faith, and that Islam cannot be reformed, but in the vast world of today, such a view does not offer solutions. It does not address the fact that 1.6 billion Muslims are not going to disappear, and ignores the facts that human change and ideological evolution are historic phenomena. Bernard Lewis wrote eleven years prior to 9/11: "Islam has brought comfort and peace of mind to countless millions of men and women," and notes that "the Muslim world is far from unanimous in its rejection of the West." Steel - Famous Economists Get It Wrong

When a large number of famous economists from all sides of the political spectrum agree on something, the odds are that it is wrong. A new letter on the subject of steel tariffs is a good example of that rule. In a public letter dated Wednesday July 12th, economists including ex-chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors Jason Furman, and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz argue that the U.S. should not impose tariffs on steel by invoking Section 232 of the trade law referring to national security concerns.  Their arguments defy common sense, are forty years out of date, and ignore the national security issues. [more...]

Why Are We Funding Islamic Terror in Israel?

Master Sgt. Haiel Sitawe, the father of a newborn baby, and Kamil Shnaan, who was newly engaged, were murdered in an Islamic terrorist attack in Jerusalem. The two Israeli police officers were members of the Druze community in Israel. The terrorists who shot them were killed by other police officers. While Israel will compensate the families of the dead police officers, the Palestinian Authority will compensate the families of the terrorists. And American taxpayers will compensate both. This is typical of a foreign policy in which we fund both the terrorists and the terrorized. Sooner or later, we are going to have to choose a side. [more...]

The Left’s Next Step - Redefining ‘Hate Speech’ as Violence

Liberals are hell-bent on weaponizing words to advance their totalitarian agenda. The left has spent decades successfully normalizing the intentionally vague term “hate speech” in the culture, even going so far as to insist that it should not be protected by the First Amendment. But what is “hate speech?” It’s anything the left wants it to be, of course. When the media elites of CNN, HBO,  The View or late night talk shows openly bash Christians or the traditional values of flyover Americans, it is never, ever condemned as hate speech; but those same elites leap to denounce virtually everything the right says as such. It is a brilliantly effective way to delegitimize conservatives and their ideas, and to exclude them from the public sphere. Now liberals want to take the concept of hate speech to the next level, redefining the word “violence” to include emotionally hurtful language. [more...]

Healthcare Reform - A Way Forward

The healthcare reform impasse is a distraction. Whether you are for free market or single payer, the status quo is designed to keep you locked in the maze where promises of winning at all costs or fixing the broken system is the cheese that everyone is chasing after. Over the past 8 years there has been one constant no matter who is in power – our healthcare system continues to get worse. Since the passage of the ACA healthcare costs have gone up, choice of doctors has gone down, access has narrowed and our healthcare system is now last among the developed countries for delivering efficient, cost-effective quality medical care. Maybe it is time we step back and ask a few simple questions: [more...]
