The FBI has a big transparency problem. For a year, the media has been using the FBI’s estimates of reported crime to claim that crime has been falling. When the FBI released its numbers for 2023 in September 2024, it hid that it had revised its earlier crime data for 2021 and 2022, hiding the increase in 2022 and that there had been a net increase in crime over 2022 and 2023. October Job Report Far Below Expectations, Total Private Sector and Manufacturing Employment Drop, JQI Flat

The U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI) is now 83.59, essentially flat with only a 0.01% increase compared to last month. Meanwhile, the overall October 2024 Jobs Report from the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics showed only 12,000 jobs added in October. This figure shows extremely low employment gains in October, the lowest since December 2020 amid COVID induced losses. The poor job growth is partially attributed to the impact of the dual hurricanes of Helene and Milton and the extended strike by Boeing employees. However, even with the hurricanes and strikes in mind, economists still projected about 120,000 jobs added in October, far higher than the actual 12,000 jobs gained. Worse still, total private sector employment actually fell by 28,000 jobs - a bad sign for the current administration before the election. [more...]

The federal government has failed to resolve the obvious conflict between two key federal election laws. 1993 Motor Voter requires the option for citizens to register to vote when they apply for a driver’s license. It gives a 90-day window in advance of an election where names can’t be removed from the election rolls. There’s also the one federal election law (there aren’t that many) that is rarely mentioned, even by the self-appointed election integrity experts. New Mexico Grants $10 Million to Relatively Unknown China Solar Panel Maker

A new solar company called Ebon Solar has secured a $10 million grant from the state of New Mexico, along with $1 million in financing and another $1 billion in a state-backed bond, to build an 834,000-square-foot solar cell manufacturing facility near Albuquerque, NM. This is one of at least three solar-related projects announced in the state since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. Israeli multinational EnLight Renewable Energy and U.S. investment company D.E. Shaw are commissioning solar-plus-storage projects to build utility-scale solar projects in the state. Last year, Array Technologies announced plans to build a second tracker manufacturing plant in the state. I just returned from Taiwan. Two clear messages were shared while I was there: 1) Taiwan expects a Cuban Missile like "Quarantine" within six months. Most recently, Amazon’s Alexa has come under scathing criticism for clearly favoring Kamala Harris over Donald Trump when people asked Alexa who they should vote for. To study the chatbots’ political biases, the Crime Prevention Research Center, which I head, asked various AI programs questions on crime and gun control in March and again in August and ranked the answers on how progressive or conservative their responses were.
