Preventing Another Financial Crisis

In his new book, 2008: What Really Happened, financial expert, Todd Sheets presents a three-fold approach to preventing a similar crisis in the future. It involves 1) eliminating the role played by GSEs in national housing markets; 2) eliminating or drastically limiting the Fed’s ability to pump up asset bubbles via interest rates; and 3) requiring variable net asset value reporting for all money market mutual funds. That adds up to significant changes that bring together transparency with important restraints on the power of particular state agencies. Yet, as significant as these measures would be if ever transformed into policy, they do not constitute the key reform the author has in mind. The FBI has a big transparency problem. For a year, the media has been using the FBI’s estimates of reported crime to claim that crime has been falling. When the FBI released its numbers for 2023 in September 2024, it hid that it had revised its earlier crime data for 2021 and 2022, hiding the increase in 2022 and that there had been a net increase in crime over 2022 and 2023. October Job Report Far Below Expectations, Total Private Sector and Manufacturing Employment Drop, JQI Flat

The U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI) is now 83.59, essentially flat with only a 0.01% increase compared to last month. Meanwhile, the overall October 2024 Jobs Report from the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics showed only 12,000 jobs added in October. This figure shows extremely low employment gains in October, the lowest since December 2020 amid COVID induced losses. The poor job growth is partially attributed to the impact of the dual hurricanes of Helene and Milton and the extended strike by Boeing employees. However, even with the hurricanes and strikes in mind, economists still projected about 120,000 jobs added in October, far higher than the actual 12,000 jobs gained. Worse still, total private sector employment actually fell by 28,000 jobs - a bad sign for the current administration before the election. [more...]

The Virginia election case is in front of Supreme Court right now.

The federal government has failed to resolve the obvious conflict between two key federal election laws. 1993 Motor Voter requires the option for citizens to register to vote when they apply for a driver’s license. It gives a 90-day window in advance of an election where names can’t be removed from the election rolls. There’s also the one federal election law (there aren’t that many) that is rarely mentioned, even by the self-appointed election integrity experts. It's 18USC611 Voting by Aliens, which unequivocally says one must be a lawful U.S. citizen to vote.
