Hillary, Can You Feel the Bern?

With last night’s Iowa Caucus action, the personal brands of the candidates became front and center once again. As a personal branding consultant, I’ve been watching this election cycle closely. Last night was no exception. Winning isn’t always winning. Despite Clinton’s ultimate and minuscule victory over Sanders, who really won the night? The degree to which Sanders inspired millennials, who are disenchanted with politics as usual, to participate is in many ways a much more important and longer-term gain that could make the difference in the end. Enter Chinese New Year of the Monkey

On Monday, February 8, the ancient Chinese Lunar calendar, based on a 12-year cycle of different animal years, exits the Year of the Sheep or goat and enters the Year of the Monkey. Chinese astrologers warn that 2016 will be a year of competition and challenge, youthful energy and fun, curiosity and creativity, intelligence and trickery, like monkeys themselves. Negative attack ads are flooding the airwaves in Iowa and New Hampshire. Front runner Donald Trump, his chief rival Ted Cruz, climbing centrist Marco Rubio, and mainstream media favorite John Kasich are the targets of countless advertising buys that are crafted to direct attention toward the perceived shortcomings of each of the GOP presidential candidates. Florida Senator Rubio is being targeted in New Hampshire and in national ads by Right to Rise, a Jeb Bush-friendly super PAC. Apple and Google Battle it out to be King of the Tech Mountain

For much of 2015, Wall Street speculated Apple may be the first company to reach a trillion-dollar market cap. Last February, Apple saw its market cap peak at $774 billion, a record setting number. Now, not even 12 months later, the company has shed $240 billion in value. How did this happen? Last week, Apple posted its fourth quarter earnings and, in the words of Forbes Magazine, got “creamed.” Across the board, Wall Street slammed Apple for subpar numbers. The already declining stock dropped another 5% after the report. Why are investors dropping Apple? Apple confirmed investors’ worst fear: stalled growth. Last quarter, Apple stopped growing, and in fact, CEO Tim Cook predicted a decline in future sales. Silicon Valley is filled with the skeletons of once strong companies that stopped growing and lost investors soon after. Wall Street worries Apple will join them. Why the Left Can’t Understand Islam

The left’s greatest intellectual error is its conviction that the world can be divided into a binary power struggle in which both sides agree on the nature of the struggle, but disagree on the outcome. For leftists of a certain generation, it was class. Marx began the Communist Manifesto by laying out a primal class struggle throughout human history. For Marxists, everything in the world could be broken down to a class struggle with the wealthy oppressors on one side and the oppressed on the other. It didn’t matter that this model didn’t fit a reality in which Communist leaders came from wealthy backgrounds and their opponents were just as likely to be poor peasants. Lying, Cheating and Stealing... an American Way of Life?

Over the years I have watched the American people and the legal system back down on truly criminal issues because we have too many people in jail. They say our judicial system is overloaded and can’t take anymore. So now we stop enforcing laws or shorten jail sentences? We basically give up? Are we afraid to call them out as bad actions? Has political correctness made it so wrong to call thugs, thugs; terrorists, terrorists; and so on? For example, General Petraeus was sentenced to two years parole and a $40,000 fine for giving classified material to his girlfriend and biographer. It pretty much ruined his career because he swore on his outgoing paperwork from the CIA that he had returned or destroyed all classified material. He obviously didn’t! (This may be a bad one.) The latest poll shows Trump leading 42 to 12 and establishment favorites Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and John Kasich are all in single digits. It’s all over folks. Hollywood Celebrities Launch Trump Attack

When members of the far-left in Hollywood are using the same script as the editors of National Review, we know we are living in very surreal times. “Stop Hate, Dump Trump” is a new slogan that has been adopted by a group of Hollywood liberals in the hopes of derailing Donald Trump’s campaign bullet train. In an almost simultaneous effort, National Review has devoted almost every page of the most recent issue of its magazine to essays that urge voters to withhold support from the GOP frontrunner - something that most likely would have appalled conservative icon and magazine founder William F. 47 Cents a Gallon

Last Sunday, a few lucky Americans got to pay 47 cents for a gallon of gas. A few years ago, when fuel was topping $5 a gallon, this would have seemed impossible.  Now, it might just be a sign of things to come. A few gas stations in northern Michigan found themselves in a brief, but newsworthy, price war. One location dropped prices to 95 cents, another 77 cents, and two gas stations offered 47 cent gas. Monday, the market corrected itself, and those few audacious gas stations brought prices back to $1.46 and $1.47 a gallon. Gasbuddy.com, which tracks gas prices across the country, now lists the average price per gallon in the U.S. at $1.89. [more...]


The Problem with Bernie Sanders Voters is They Don’t Actually Vote

You keep hearing about how well Bernie Sanders is doing. But Bernie does best with people who don't necessarily vote. Only including voters who previously caucused in their party's most recent competitive caucus, Cruz is neck-and-neck with Trump, with 30% for Cruz to 28% for Trump. The Sanders campaign could very well be headed for a crushing defeat in Iowa. He's dependent on young, hipster voters, while Hillary Clinton took the minority part of the Obama coalition. Unfortunately for them, the core Democratic voting bloc is older and whiter than the Obama coalition. We are so busy attacking Trump that we are not paying attention to the issues; we are not dealing with the issues as a party. Trump wouldn’t be able to make any headway if we had the right candidates and if people trusted the mainstream Republicans. Over 60% of Republicans feel betrayed by their party. They believe the party doesn’t care or listen to them except at election time. Republican rank and file wanted the Republican elects to vote against funding Planned Parenthood, illegal immigration benefits, refugee relocation money, a $1.7 billion dollar interest payment to Iran on $200 million owed. ISIS’s Barbarity and Leftist Feminists’ Callous Heart

ISIS’s brutality knows no bounds. Early medieval style beheadings, crucifixions, enslavement and rapes of women and young girls are ISIS’s calling cards. They have slaughtered or abducted thousands of civilians and have committed systematic genocide against Yazidis and Christians. Yet when reports of such acts of barbarism began to emerge in 2014, the progressive left either ignored the worst demonstrations of pure evil in our time or pooh-poohed them. For example, the far left feminist Naomi Wolf, pretending to be an objective journalist, has demanded proof of ISIS transgressions. She questioned whether the videos of beheadings by ISIS jihadists were real. “So much about ISIS seems hyped/spun,” she said on her Facebook page in August 2014. In response to accounts of ISIS jihadists’ sexual exploitation of women, she bizarrely warned us to “remember the fake accounts of ‘the HUN’ raping Belgian women that drove everyone else into World War One.” Recall that Naomi Wolf has argued in the past that Muslim women veiling themselves are doing so as an expression of their own free choice. The Supreme Court on Obama's Amnesty Plan

The Supreme Court will rule on President Barack Obama's decision to defer deportation for as many as five million undocumented immigrants, agreeing to hear the administration's appeal on one of the most contentious issues of his presidency. But what are the common sense solutions to the threats illegal immigration is having on our national security - the threats posed by America's unprotected borders?

The DOW and S&P finished down and even though the NASDAQ finished up 5.7, it had finished in double digits the prior 3 years. Jump ahead to the first few weeks of 2016. Rolling Stone and Sean Penn Owe America and Mexico an Apology

Friday, January 9th, Rolling Stone Magazine released an interview between actor Sean Penn and drug lord Joaquin Guzman, better known as El Chapo. Penn interviewed the infamous cartel boss in October of 2015. Rolling Stone waited until El Chapo’s capture to publish Penn’s story and interview. Penn’s celebrity comes just as much from his social activism as it does his films – but interviewing El Chapo seems to fall into neither category. It seems Penn’s article reads part Hollywood action movie, part morning TV fluff-piece. I understand good journalism requires a look at all sides of an issue, but some issues simply don’t have those other sides. Penn asked questions that allowed El Chapo to give empty answers, akin to what a politician might give, or a guest on Good Morning America. The actor fails to ask any real follow-up questions letting El Chapo blame the proliferation of drugs on its consumers, not the suppliers. Penn also lets Guzman say his organization is not a cartel, and, when asked if he uses violence, Guzman says “all I do is defend myself, nothing more. But do I start trouble? Wayne Allyn Root will deliver the Tea Party response to the State of the Union this week, eschewing the Tea Party Express's tradition of inviting a well-known politician in favor of a political outsider. Mourning in America

Obama's seven years have produced mourning in America and a widespread pessimistic feeling of loss, despair and grief. Millions now feel that something essential to our success and well-being has died here – that we are sad witnesses to the death of the American Dream. A new poll published January 5 by Esquire Magazine and NBC News finds that 52 percent of Americans now believe that the American Dream was “once true but not anymore.” Another 11 percent now believe that it “never held true.” [more...]

The most interesting thing about the 2016 Golden Globe Awards was not the highly predictable winners but rather the highly predictable barbs thrown Hollywood’s way by contentious host Rick Gervais. After referring to the audience as “disgusting, pill-popping, sexual deviant scum,” Gervais announced the following: “I’m going to do this monologue and then go into hiding. No Need to Fear the Refugees?

Over Christmas and New Year’s, Germany had a rash of rapes and assaults. The numbers were shocking as they have never seen this kind of crime spree against women. Over 100 “filed complaints” of rape and assault over the new year and police believe there are over 1,000 male refugees involved. Rapes were conducted by “rape gangs” and women were beaten and raped in public. The mayor of the German city, Cologne, where many of the assaults took place suggested it was the fault of the women! Public Unions on the Precipice

Unions representing employees in the public sector have been dominant in politics since 1977 when the U.S. Supreme Court decided the case of Abood v. Detroit Board of Education, and, in so doing, eliminating public employees’ rights to decide if they wanted to be part of a union or finance its policies and politics. The 1977 decision bolstered public sector unionism. In making its decision, the court affirmed the constitutionality of a Michigan law requiring public school teachers who are not dues-paying union members to pay “agency” or “fair-share” fees. The practical effect has been the allowance of forced unionism of public employees by the union bosses, resulting in 35.7% of public employees to be unionized vs. just 6.6% of private sector employees today. The lack of free choice has done unmeasurable damage to the First Amendment rights of millions of government employees since the decision 39 years ago. [more...]

North Korea and Iran - The Nuclear Duo

North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test on January 6th, which it claimed was a hydrogen bomb. Despite some skepticism as to North Korea’s claim that it had actually tested a hydrogen bomb, the Obama administration acknowledged that North Korea had indeed tested some sort of nuclear device. The administration condemned North Korea’s latest testing as a violation of a series of past United Nations Security Council resolutions. "We do not and will not accept North Korea as a nuclear armed state, and actions such as this latest test only strengthen our resolve," declared Secretary of State John Kerry. Mr. Kerry is a bit late with his declaration. North Korea has had an active nuclear arms program for nearly a decade and has conducted three of its four nuclear tests during President Obama’s time in office. [more...]

Those who opt for the streaming of their entertainment, sports, and news fare are about to be treated to an even bigger selection of choices in 2016. The unpopular bundling model commonly used by the cable and satellite television industries is going by the wayside. What has happened up until recently is that bundling has created a situation in which far too many television viewers have been forced to subscribe to a huge number of aggregated channels that they do not need or desire to receive. Chicago’s Strict Gun Control Laws Didn’t Prevent Most Mass Shootings

Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation and one of highest number of homicides and shootings. Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama’s former White House Chief of Staff, has been mayor of Chicago since 2011. Emanuel shares many of Obama’s liberal anti-American agendas including the desire to ban guns and disarm the citizenry. Like his mentor, Emanuel has done everything possible to enact strict gun control laws in Chicago and like his mentor, he claims that guns are the cause of gun violence and passing tough gun control laws will lower gun violence and deaths in his city. What Makes the 2016 Presidential Election Historic?

First and foremost, American voters are angry, frustrated and upset with the political parties and “establishment” politicians because they have largely ignored voters and their demands to solve many issues facing America.  Americans are tired of sending people back to Washington to solve our top problems and not having the problems fixed.  Take Obamacare as one example: Americans wanted it repealed in 2010 when it gave control of the House to another party with 63 House seats changing hands.  Americans wanted Obamacare repealed again in 2014 when it gave control of the Senate to Republicans.  In both cases, Obamacare was not repealed. Other problems not adequately addressed included the staggering national debt, now exceeding $18.8 trillion... not to mention, the illegal immigration problem. 2016 Economic Projections

First things first: Puerto Rico is turning into America’s Greece. The island territory is laden with debt it can’t pay, and what’s worse, Americans are the ones holding the receipts. About 50% of Americans over the age of 40 hold Puerto Rican debt in some way in California, New York, and Florida; nearly 100% of the over-40 population is exposed in some way. Puerto Rico’s debt comes from a laundry list of issues: over 60% of its population is on Medicare or Medicaid, importing energy is wildly expense, and, not unlike Greece, its government can be rather stubborn. The way I see it, no one knows what Puerto Rico will do, but the options are: 1) default (this is bad for everybody; 2) The U.S. grants Puerto Rico the ability to declare Chapter 9 bankruptcy; or 3) The U.S. gives Puerto Rico a $70+ billion bailout package. None of this will go well for anyone, and frankly there is no way to tell what will happen; but we will see a decision in 2016, and it could put a dent in the U.S. economy. [more...]


CAIR’s Lawyer Claims Pro-Israel Charities are Terrorists

Forget academic boycotts and protesting Israeli oranges in the produce aisle. The new BDS targets are Jewish charities with a special focus on those that provide services and support in ’67 Israel. Under its new Muslim boss, Amna Farooqi, J Street U has been pressuring Jewish charities not to help Jews living in territory which had been conquered and ethnically cleansed of Jews by the invading Muslim armies during Israel’s War of Independence.
