2013 Golden Globes: A Melding of Awards and Politics

Sunday evening, from the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the yearly Hollywood ritual of awarding Golden Globes played out. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the liberal organization behind the Globes, has scant credibility within the entertainment industry itself. However, the Globes are considered valuable by executives, studios, and other film and television related businesses, particularly in terms of its public relations effect and potential impact on Academy Awards voting members.

In an apparent attempt to limit the influence of the Globes, for the first time in its history the Academy moved up its Oscar nominations announcement so that the Golden Globes ceremony would instead trail. The HFPA includes both film and television awards and gives separate nominations for the drama category and comedy or musical category, allowing for more celebrity nominees to be present in the audience. New York City Schools Admit They Spend $6,900 Per Student - On Bus Transportation

The New York City Department of Education has been catching heat from transportation unions lately over a decision to solicit bids for transportation services for the first time in years, in an effort to curtail runaway costs. The district has not sought "significant" bids for student transportation services in 33 years. That means it’s probably been using the same companies for years, without competitive bids to naturally control rising costs. And those costs are increased every year because the companies use highly-paid union drivers. [more...]

The Formidable Islamist Minority in America

A summary of polls about the ideological makeup of the Muslim-American community shows that the majority is moderate, but there is a formidable minority influenced by Islamist doctrine. A significant number are refusing to give answers or are still figuring out where they stand on issues like terrorism and Sharia Law. The number one question is how many Muslim-Americans support terrorism. A 2011 Pew poll found very little support for Al-Qaeda, with only 2% viewing the terrorist group very favorably, 3% somewhat favorably and 11% somewhat unfavorably. About 70% view Al-Qaeda very unfavorably, an increase of 12% since 2007. [more...]

President Obama is a unique breed of socialist. He is a hybrid socialist/fascist. He understands that he needs "cover" to destroy America. He needs the support of famous billionaires like Warren Buffett and credible fat cat corporate CEOs like Jeffrey Immelt of GE to convince the masses that he is not out to destroy capitalism. He needs to show that rich people are on his side, that these rich guys agree with him that tax increases on the rich are "fair." While liberal Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA) pounds the drum for gun control and the Obama White House seeks to capitalize on a tragic shooting for an anti-gun political advantage, it might be wise to heed the words of ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso: "Not so fast, my friend!"

Despite an all-out assault on the NRA and the 2nd Amendment by the mainstream media in the weeks following the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the NRA remains as popular as it was BEFORE the shooting. The push for banning weapons of ANY kind seems to be gaining no traction at all with the general public; and the American people are voting with their pocketbooks with record levels of guns and ammo being sold in December, 2012... even in the "bluest" of states. President Obama has nominated former Senator and Vietnam War veteran Chuck Hagel to replace Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense, and John Brennan to serve as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Although Brennan’s Senate confirmation may meet less resistance, Hagel’s nomination is sure to spark a fierce confirmation battle in the Senate - a battle that would be completely warranted. Hagel, after all, has espoused a deep kinship with the radical anti-war Left, advocated reckless foreign policy positions such as direct talks with terrorists and their leading sponsor, Iran, and demonstrated a nasty hostility to Israel and to Jews in general. To have this kind of individual serving as the head of the U.S. Defense Department is to severely jeopardize the security interests of the U.S., our ally Israel and the rest of the free world. CAIR to Media: 'Stop Using the Term Islamist'

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), identified by the U.S. government as an entity of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood, is suggesting a New Year’s resolution for the media: Stop using the term “Islamist.” CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, who expressed his desire for “the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future” in 1993 and, again, in 2003, writes that the media shouldn’t say “Islamist” anymore because it is "currently used in almost exclusively pejorative context." Wisconsin’s School Choice Programs Big Hit with Students, Parents

While parent and student satisfaction are the most important measuring sticks, researchers have also given a big thumbs up to Milwaukee’s school choice program. A five-year study conducted by the University of Arkansas found that 94 percent of students who used the voucher program during all four years of high school graduated on time compared with 75 percent of students who remained in Milwaukee Public Schools. Al Gore: The Consummate Hypocrite

Al Gore’s $100 million payday, which resulted from his sale of Current TV to the Al Jazeera network, exposes the former vice president and chief environmental evangelist as someone who has taken hypocrisy to unprecedented heights.

After rejecting a lucrative offer from talk show host Glenn Beck, Gore opted to accept oil-tainted money, timed his business transaction to avoid paying a “fair share” of taxes, used his former office to lobby for legislation, and ultimately ended up providing assistance to a foreign government-owned network with an alleged anti-American bias.

At the New York University School of Law in 2006, Gore said the following: “Many Americans are tired of borrowing huge amounts of money from China to buy huge amounts of oil from the Persian Gulf to make huge amounts of pollution that destroys the planet’s climate.”

In relation to his Current TV transaction, it appears as though Gore was comfortably able to exempt himself from his own personal ethical, ideological, and fiscal framework. [more...]

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and her boyfriend Aaron Greene, 31, were arrested on weapons charges this past weekend in their Greenwich Village apartment on West 9th Street. They were charged with possessing bomb-making materials and were also found to have in their apartment bomb-making manuals, various booby traps and a sawed-off shotgun. Both are reported to “have close ties to the left-wing social and academic establishment in Chicago and elsewhere,” according to The Daily Caller which had access to confirming records. Although no clear motive or link to any known terrorist group has been established to date, the chief spokesperson for the New York Police Department characterized the explosive they found in the apartment as one "used in terrorists’ attacks previously." United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon devoted part of his year-end press conference on December 19th to bashing Israel for its announcement of plans to build new housing in and around Jerusalem. He claimed that the Israeli announcement was a "near fatal blow to a very fragile Middle East peace process."

R.I. District Gives Teachers Annual 11.2% Raise, with No Demand for Improved Performance

It pays to work for the government. Just ask the teachers in the Westerly, Rhode Island school district. The school committee just agreed to a new union collective bargaining agreement that doubles teachers’ pay in nine years. Perhaps all the news we’ve been hearing about public schools lacking funds has been exaggerated. The pay raises will come through adjustments to the annual teacher “step salary” schedule. There will now be nine steps up the salary ladder instead of 11, and each step will pay teachers more money than in the past... a lot more, in fact. [more...]
