A new study conducted by the Crime Prevention Research Center and John Lott shows that the number of concealed handgun permits soared in 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic and has increased over 10% since the end of last year. According to the study, the number of concealed handgun permits surged to 21.52 million in 2020, a 48% increase since 2016 and a 10.5% increase from the same time last year. [more...]

The Tragedy of Francis Collins's Model for Science-Faith Integration

Francis Collins is Director of the National Institutes of Health. He is probably the best-known evangelical Christian in the federal science establishment. He recently announced he will be stepping down from that post by the end of 2021. Collins has been lauded for showing how a religious believer can rise to the highest levels of the scientific establishment while keeping his faith intact and while integrating his faith with his science. I do not question the sincerity of Collins's Christian faith. But I think this depiction of Collins as a someone who has developed a good model for integrating faith and science is in many respects a tragic myth. [more...]

That's the argument the far-left activists over at Salon are making. For better or worse, for right or wrong, scholars have noticed that secession is more pervasive today than ever. This secessionist trend began with the collapse of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day, 1991. The Soviet Union dissolved, and as a result, virtually overnight, Russia lost a third of its territory nations like Georgia, Armenia, Belarus, Estonia, Uzbekistan, and the like. Scholars argue that what happened to the Soviet Union may happen to more and more nations worldwide because the modern Cold War era that defined geopolitics for two generations has ended, and a new politic has emerged. This new politic was fast replacing the modern world with a post-modern world, where more and more populations return to their own cultures, customs, and traditions. Joe Rogan Verbally Spars with CNN's Sanjay Gupta

Joe Rogan became the unfortunate target of the cancel culture crowd. His crime? Asking questions about vaccine mandates and COVID therapies... and having the gall to have expert guests appear on his show to explain their positions. After Rogan himself tested positive for COVID-19, he chose to use Ivermectin as part of a therapy to regain his health. CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta made an appearance on Rogan's podcast. It was there that Rogan took the opportunity to confront the guest regarding the network's false characterization of Ivermectin, which Rogan had used to facilitate his recovery. CNN had labeled the medication a "horse dewormer." "It's a lie," Rogan said during the interview. [more...]

Tainted Blood Pressure Medication from India Can 'Change Someone's DNA'

The latest example of tainted medicine from an Indian lab can change a person's DNA and was flagged by the Food and Drug Administration as having a faulty process in making a key ingredient for the blood pressure medication known as Valsartan. The tainted compound in question was an impurity in azidomethyl-biphenyl-tetrazole (AZBT). It is known to damage DNA, and long-term exposure to an azido impurity in blood pressure pills can increase cancer risks. [more...]

Number of Concealed Carry Permits Surge Past 21.5 Million

Data released by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) and John Lott show that the number of concealed carry permits in America has now surpassed 21.5 million. The CPRC study shows the exact number of concealed permits is over 21.52 million, which is a "48% increase since 2016." Moreover, the current number of permits represents "a 10.5% increase over the number of permits [CPRC] counted a year ago in 2020." [more...]

Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, announced he will be stepping down from his post by the end of 2021. Collins is probably the best known evangelical Christian in the federal science establishment, and among many Christians he has long held the status of a rock star, with people lining up for "selfies" with him at conferences. Collins’s announcement inspired a rush of accolades from his religious boosters. Evangelical political commentator David French called Collins "a national treasure," while theologian Russell Moore of Christianity Today magazine lauded Collins for his "wisdom, expertise, and most of all ... Christian humility and grace." I don't question the sincerity of Collins's faith. But Collins isn't a "national treasure." He’s a national disgrace. [more...]

Texas Bans Vax Mandates as Red States Revolt Against Biden

The fantastic free state of Texas does it again! Governor Gregg Abbott signed an executive order banning private businesses from forcing vaccine mandates on their employees or customers. This order expands a previous executive order that Abbott signed that prohibited all state agencies and all government institutions from requiring employees to get vaccinated. The brand new executive order is radically sweeping in its scope, in that it now includes all private businesses in Texas. It explicitly bans any entity in the state from enforcing a vaccine mandate of any kind. [more...]

Sly Stallone's Lost and Found Faith

Sly Stallone talked about his faith during a conference call that was hosted by Central Christian Church of Las Vegas's Pastor Jud Wilhite: "I was raised in a Catholic home, a Christian home, and I went to Catholic schools. I was taught the faith and went as far as I could with it until one day I got out into the so-called real world. I was presented with temptation and I lost my way and made a lot of bad choices," Sly shared. Minorities and women make up a significant portion of the increase

According to a study, the number of concealed handgun permits surged to 21.52 million in 2020, a 48% increase since 2016 and a 10.5% increase from the same time last year. Dr. John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, told Fox News that increased crime and the 'defund the police' movement have contributed to the rise in gun permits. "The reason for the increase is the same as the increase in gun sales over the last two years - increased crime and concerns that police aren't able to do their job and that large numbers of inmates have been released from jails and prisons," Lott said. Lott added that the increase would likely have been larger if not for Coronavirus lockdowns that halted or greatly reduced issuing permits in 20 states. [more...]

But his recent rhetoric is anything but Christian. Earlier this month, Collins appeared on MSNBC. He first suggested that unvaccinated people were selfish, declaring that "this is really an occasion to think about loving your neighbor, not just yourself." Collins then attacked unvaccinated people and politicians who oppose vaccine mandates as killers on the wrong side of history. Dismissing their concerns as a "philosophical political argument" that is part of "a culture war," Collins said their view is "killing people, including, I'm sad to say, some children." [more...]

The Appalling Moral Failure of Francis Collins

Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has announced his intention to step down at the end of 2021 after more than 12 years heading the agency. The accolades are already rolling in. Noted evangelical political commentator David French, for example, rushed to praise Collins as "a national treasure."

But Collins's real legacy is anything but praiseworthy, and the tendency of figures in the faith community to ignore his real record is far from admirable. This year of all years should have made the truth about Francis Collins clear. Last month, documents were released suggesting that top NIH officials may have lied when they denied that the NIH had funded "gain of function" research in Wuhan, China, that could have resulted in a pathogen that could infect humans.

After reviewing the documents, Rutgers University biologist Richard Ebright had a blistering response: "The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support 'gain of function' research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement... are untruthful." It was another blow to the reputation of Collins in a year when his agency has faced multiple scandals and controversies. [more...]

A record 5.6 million patients in the United Kingdom are currently on waiting lists for hospital care. That's equivalent to nearly one in 10 Britons. Of that group, about 300,000 have been waiting at least one year for treatment. Those who can afford to are increasingly paying out of pocket for private care. More than 20% of British residents are doing so, according to recent polling. Britain's National Health Service has long been a source of pride for the country. The organizers of the 2012 London Olympics made the NHS a focus of the Games' Opening Ceremony. But the country's publicly funded healthcare system is failing to provide high-quality, accessible care. Its failures should serve as a warning for progressives who want to institute Medicare for All here in the United States. [more...]
