Is it Time for a Special Counsel to Investigate the FBI?

Text messages between two FBI employees (who were also romantically involved) - Peter Strzok and Lisa Page - during the 2016 presidential election, were revealed Monday by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. There were 50,000 text messages between the two FBI employees. Plus, apparently another batch of messages were missing during a 5-month period from December 14, 2016 to May 17, 2017. These text messages, rather than clearing up issues, raise additional issues about the potential involvement of the FBI and the Obama administration in reacting to the election of Trump. Among the few givens in the unfolding drama of alleged Russia-Trump collusion is that former MI6 intelligence officer Christopher Steele wrote the Donald Trump-Russia dossier, alternately known as the "Steele Dossier." This is the notorious document that purports to detail "Republican candidate Donald Trump's activities in Russia and compromising relationship with the Kremlin." The above quote is from the subhead of the document, titled "Company Intelligence Report 2016/080," yet the same subhead hints at a disturbing pattern evident throughout the document: it appears to be written by someone whose native language is something other than English. President Trump’s “America first” trade strategy will likely gain momentum as 2018 gets underway. The promised “renegotiation” of NAFTA is in full swing; and America’s solar panel, steel, and aluminum manufacturers are eagerly awaiting decisions in trade cases involving heavily subsidized imports from China. Many domestic manufacturers are reporting increased sales because President Trump’s trade rhetoric has caused multinationals to look harder for American sourcing. The administration is clearly serious. Already this year, promised efforts to revisit the 2012 U.S.-South Korea trade agreement have begun. This is important since America’s trade deficit with South Korea has more than doubled from $13 billion in 2011 to $27 billion in 2016. [more...]

According to FBI statistics, the nationwide, decades-long decline in violent crime, to include homicide, reversed itself and increased since 2014. Will President Trump’s vocal support of law enforcement help reverse the trend and be reflected in 2017 crime statistics? There is no doubt that Presidents Obama and Trump have differing views of law enforcement. Obama and the liberals took the political position of demonizing law enforcement and treating offenders as victims in order to motivate his African American base. The cost of that position was a high one, if linked to increases in violent crime and homicide or the increasing ambush and deadly attacks on police in 2016-2017. Trump, on the other hand, has taken every opportunity to praise the brave men and women of law enforcement. He did so as a candidate and continues to do so as President. When Time picks an abstract concept as its ‘Thing of the Year,’ it’s the kiss of death. So, #MeToo was headed for trouble as soon as it became Time’s ‘Thing of the Year.’ The best way to fight one hashtag was with another hashtag; #TimesUp replaced #MeToo. But where #MeToo was a raw personal accusation, #TimesUp was an impersonal leftist slogan of political urgency. In true Hollywood style, the solution is sending a lot of money to an established lefty group to tackle the problem: the National Women’s Law Center. It’s the same old Harvey Weinstein solution. Throw money at a trendy lefty cause and keep on inviting actresses up to your hotel room. Play the noble celebrity hero saving poor people in flyover country by writing big checks to big lefty insiders in major cities. [more...]

Fifty years ago, the movie that changed the movies premiered. Anybody old enough to remember films before “Bonnie and Clyde” can testify to the jolting power of Arthur Penn’s kinetic blend of bluegrass slapstick, Depression-era nostalgia and gruesome, stylized violence. But something else was revealed then, something that I, just 14 at the time, was too callow and ignorant to notice behind the movie’s aesthetic sheen - the moral idiocy that has since come to define so much of contemporary American popular culture. “Bonnie and Clyde” staked a claim to a moral seriousness that supposedly validated the stylistic innovations and elevated the film beyond mere flashy entertainment. Millennials Prefer a Socialist, Communist or Fascist Nation

A recent poll by YouGov finds 58% of millennials would prefer to live in “a socialist, communist or fascist nation rather than a capitalistic one,” the Washington Times reports, with a staggering 44% preferring socialism. “This troubling turn highlights widespread historical illiteracy in American society regarding socialism and the systemic failure of our education system to teach students about the genocide, destruction and misery caused by communism since the Bolshevik Revolution one hundred years ago,” Marion Smith, Executive Director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, said in a statement. Only two years ago, the same group found 36% of millennials have a positive opinion of socialism - so the trend is troubling, to say the least. [more...]

Franco a Fiasco for the Oscars?

It is expected that the Oscars telecast will follow the lead of the other awards shows and make Hollywood’s sex scandals a frazzled thread woven throughout the proceedings. Of concern for the Academy, though, is something involving actor James Franco. The Hollywood star has been viewed as an actual contender, not only for a nomination for an Academy Award for his work in “The Disaster Artist,” but also as a top tier candidate for a Best Actor trophy at the Oscar telecast. Critics are raving about Franco’s portrayal of the real-life director of “The Room,” which is said by critics and fans to be the worst film ever made. The particular predicament for the Academy, at this extraordinary time in Hollywood history, are some allegations that have been raised against Franco concerning sexually inappropriate behavior. Five women have accused him of inappropriate or sexually exploitative conduct, according to an investigation by The Los Angeles Times. [more...]

43,000 to Lose Their Jobs as Construction Firm Collapses

A major construction firm with multiple contracts across the globe has collapsed. Carillion, which employs 43,000 people worldwide reported it has no other choice than to close. Carillion has roughly 19,000 employees in the UK and 10,000 in Canada. Three quarters of its revenue comes from the UK where it holds major building contracts with the government. Back in late 2007, shares of Carillion were worth $6.30, but last week that dropped to about $0.17. [more...]

Apple Under Investigation

Late last year, Apple issued an apology for deliberately slowing down old iPhone models through software updates. Many of its customers had suspected this for years, and now legal action has been taken against Apple for its actions. Apple apologized, but said that it slowed down the phones to prolong the life of older phone models with failing batteries. But now, Apple is under investigation in France. It is the third country to investigate Apple following Israel and the U.S., but it is the only country where the alleged offense is a crime. If found guilty, Apple may have to pay a penalty of up to 5% of their annual turnover, which is huge for a multi-billion-dollar company, and some of its executives may even face jail time. [more...]

The senior FBI figure, who had participated in the Hillary e-mail investigation, interviewed Flynn and had been part of Team Mueller, wasn't looking to State Farm for his insurance needs. Chatting with his mistress, an FBI lawyer who worked for Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Strzok worried that Trump might win. “I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office - that there’s no way [Trump] gets elected - but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk,” he wrote. “It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40.” [more...]

Poll Shows Growing Public Opposition to NAFTA

An independent public opinion poll published late last year shows growing public awareness of U.S. job loss due to imports, as well as growing public support of the view that NAFTA has been bad for the U.S. The poll was carried out by the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy, surveying 2,745 Americans. The report is entitled: Globalization and Trade, A Study of American Attitudes. The researchers conducting the poll compared the results to similar polls in 2016 and in 1999. The results show a clear trend of greater awareness of the negative consequences of unfettered free trade. [more...]

While campaigning last year, then candidate Trump, often referred to the growing opioid epidemic and the need to combat violent criminals and organizations. On February 9, 2017, within weeks of being sworn in to office, he signed an Executive Order establishing a task force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety. In furtherance of the presidential order, Attorney General Sessions established the national Public Safety Partnership (PSP) in June 2017. PSP provides an innovative framework for DOJ to enhance its support of state, tribal, and local law enforcement officers and prosecutors in the investigation, prosecution, and deterrence of violent crime, especially that related to gun violence, gangs, and drug trafficking. Trump’s Twitter Account is Keeping Us Safe

Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, concisely highlighted the usefulness of the president’s Twitter account by explaining the diplomatic value of the “nuclear button” tweet. During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” when asked whether the president’s tweet was a good idea, Haley responded, “I think that [Trump] always has to keep Kim on his toes. It’s very important that we don’t ever let him get so arrogant that he doesn’t realize the reality of what would happen if he started a nuclear war.” Haley said North Korea should clearly understand that the United States means business when it comes to Kim. Gore is being deceptive. Global warmists say that snow happens when warmth evaporates water into the air, where it freezes into snow. The weather bomb remembered as the March Blizzard of 1888 buried New York City in snowdrifts 30 feet deep. But January 2018’s record cold caused relatively little snow. Can Oprah Win the 2020 Presidential Election?

Given the long-range trends and short-range trends in play that favor conservative candidates, it is unlikely that Oprah Winfrey might get elected president. Because of her popularity, her voter intensity would probably be much higher that Hillary Clinton; but her political stands would make it difficult for her to win. Given the divided and fragmented Democratic Party, it is possible that she could win the nomination. She might also secure a nomination from a third party as well. How to Make China Pay for U.S. Solar Industry Expansion

Later this month, President Trump faces one of the biggest trade decisions of his presidency. By Jan. 26th, the president must decide whether to levy duties on solar cell and module imports, and what level those duties should be. The International Trade Commission (ITC) found in September that the industry has suffered injury from imports from China and elsewhere, and unanimously recommended that duties should be levied. The two complainants, struggling solar manufacturing companies Suniva and SolarWorld, have each said the recommended duties are not high enough to save the manufacturing industry, while the SEIA (the national trade association for the U.S. solar industry) has loudly protested that duties could have a negative impact on industry growth. NAFTA Withdrawal Likely to Boost Stock Market

Withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is likely to boost stock prices, employment and economic growth. Republican Senators told the White House earlier this week that NAFTA withdrawal will harm the stock market. But that claim is based on outdated, incorrect views on trade and investment. America’s economy and wages grew faster before the modern trade agreement era. But our manufacturing members saw substantial growth last year in part because of trade agreement uncertainty and a new focus from business on finding sources of supply within the U.S. The new approach is raising production and employment at U.S. manufacturers. Hollywood Picks ‘Man Show’ Kimmel to Host Post-Weinstein Oscars

It is difficult to decipher what exactly is driving some of Hollywood’s questionable decisions of late. On the heels of the entertainment industry’s choice of Anita Hill as sexual harassment czar, the announcement that former co-host of “The Man Show” and current late-night political pawn Jimmy Kimmel will once again take the Oscar stage as host of the show.

This will be Kimmel’s second consecutive year as emcee, despite the fact that the results of his last go-round were anything but stellar. The telecast scored low ratings, and there was the infamous gaffe in which “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as the winner for Best Picture, when in fact “Moonlight” was the movie that had taken the top spot.

It could be that Kimmel’s recent hyper-political correctness caught the attention of the Academy, particularly when he jettisoned comedy to do opinion pieces on controversial political topics, including health care and gun control. He purposely used his show to lobby against the effort of the Republican Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare, and he received the gratitude of many on the left for helping to thwart the legislation. I predict, in the January 2018 issue of Real Money Perspectives, many factors may devastate the American economy in the New Year. Most of Europe’s nations are being dissolved into the new empire of the European Union, in which national borders no longer control immigration or trade. As I explained in Money, Morality & The Machine, this “Superstate,” as founder Jean Monnet envisioned it, was to be created piecemeal, by deception, with Europeans denied a democratic vote on whether to undo their national identity. The Workaholic-in-Chief Wins

Last year, my article “Trump the Workaholic-in-Chief” explained how this was all going to work out. While both parties in Congress did their best to obstruct Trump’s cabinet picks and derail his agenda, they were largely unsuccessful. The reason is that they completely failed to understand the value of his workaholism and work ethic. And he managed to get all this accomplished while playing even more golf than Obama. Unlike his predecessor, who would do anything possible to avoid the dreadful Oval Office and putting in a full day’s work, Trump actually uses the golf course as an extension of the workplace. Key lawmakers and those important to getting things done are kept virtually captive for 3-4 hours. During that time, they are subjected to a non-stop charm offensive that helps Trump get his way.
