On Friday, former National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins appeared at a “Stand Up for Science” political rally in Washington, D.C. Collins strummed his guitar and led people in song as rally-goers blew soap bubbles in front of him. Behind him were people carrying signs bearing slogans like “Trump Trashes Science,” “He Musk Go,” and “Diabolical Oligarch Grifting Efficiently." In my book, I write a lot about Collins - on his funding of the harvesting of body parts from late-term aborted babies for research, his funding of doctors and hospitals that do transgender treatments for children, and of course his COVID record. For nearly two decades, Collins has been the most prominent - and powerful - evangelical Christian scientist in America. He sure has changed; the Collins headlined rally was in dead earnest, and it highlights the serious challenges we are facing if we want to restore credibility to government-funded science in America. During my tour in 2012, I was involved in handing over a shipping container filled with captured weapons to the Afghan government. The story is mentioned in my book, where I unsuccessfully lobbied the Major in charge to destroy the container, arguing “You know these are going right back to the Taliban as soon as we leave, right?” Without hesitation, he responded, “Oh yes, I know.” Now, those weapons are in enemy hands. It was widely understood almost a decade prior to our chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan that the government would collapse as soon as we left. Capturing the ISIS-K Abbey Gate bombing suspect sends a clear message that we are not going to let attacks against our troops go unanswered, and it should only be the beginning. Congress needs to hold widespread hearings on what happened throughout the two-decade war.

Recently, in a jaw-dropping display of bigotry, The View co-host Joy Behar launched a vicious on-air attack against tech visionary and immigrant entrepreneur Elon Musk. Behar smeared the South African-born innovator as a "foreigner, foreign agent, enemy of the United States," even suggesting Musk was "pro-apartheid" simply because he grew up in South Africa.
