TPA - Poison Pill or Vitamin for Free Trade?

Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) is currently being debated across America.  A vote in the House is expected very soon.  It's about as controversial and confusing a subject as any national issue gets with conservatives and progressives all over the map.  It definitely does not follow standard party lines. TPA is legislation originally created by Congress in the early 1970's that authorizes the president to negotiate trade agreements with other nations.  If the president negotiates a trade agreement, he is required to send it to Congress for an up or down vote within a limited period of time; this voting process does not allow any amendments to the trade agreement prior to the vote.  It's a straight up or down vote. California Sinking?

For decades California has been under political and financial siege by labor unions partnering with state politicians to press their political agendas. The poor financial condition of the state of California is indicative of the symbiotic relationship of labor and politics which serves to benefit each other to the detriment of its citizens. Despite the fact that many Californians recognize that big labor represents an oppressive cost which is destroying the state, they are currently fighting a losing battle and it continues to get progressively worse. The recession of 2008 greatly impacted economies across the world. In the seven years following the crash, markets lifted themselves back towards prosperity with varying degrees of success. One of the fastest recovering globally significant economies is that of the United States, and while there still remains years of work, we are faring much better than certain European counterparts. One of the hardest hit and slowest to recover is Greece, which is an anchor weighing down the recovery of the euro zone. CASH AND CARRY - It is Now Against the Law to "Almost" Break the Law

How much cash can you now withdraw from your bank and carry in America without risk of being arrested, or of having your assets seized, merely for possessing money in this liquid form? The ominous answer is that carrying even one dollar in cash might give the government a pretext for such actions. Once upon a time, this question usually mattered only at the border. People were required to declare if they were carrying more than $10,000 in cash or negotiable instruments when entering or leaving the United States.  Failure to make a truthful declaration to U.S. Customs can result in the forfeiture of the money a person is carrying. Today, because of anti-racketeering RICO statutes and the 2001 Patriot Act, your bank is required to notify the federal government if you deposit or withdraw $10,000 or more in cash. In effect, your bank is required to spy on your financial life in this way for the government. [more...]

Hillary Has "Metastatic Political Cancer"

Fmr. Sen. Dodd Gets Three-year Contract Extension from MPAA

Christopher Dodd is the former U.S. senator who represented the state of Connecticut for thirty long years. Dodd announced in 2010 that he would not seek re-election, but came to the decision amid a cloud of allegations. When news stories emerged that he was seeking a lucrative post-Senate lobbying position, Dodd responded by telling The Hartford Courant that he would "not lobby, but, like [former U.S. senators] Hagel and Nunn, he may teach."

The Connecticut Mirror quoted the then-senator as answering in an unequivocal manner the question surrounding his future employment by asserting the following: "No lobbying, no lobbying." In February 2011, though, Dodd did take one of the most sought after lobbying positions in the country - that being Hollywood's top lobbying post, a new job in which he would serve as Chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Dodd, who at best has a spotty track record of seeking legislation favorable to the entertainment industry and whose response to the hack of Sony's computer network was highly criticized, has nonetheless been rewarded with a three-year contract extension. We've heard this before: Americans overreacted to an attack that destroyed two skyscrapers, killed thousands and targeted the White House and the Pentagon. Americans 'overreacted' to the 9/11 attacks, according to the newly appointed first female vice-chancellor of Oxford University. Terrorism wasn't a new experience. Terrorism on this scale was. What's strange is the repetition of this narrative despite the obvious fact that no terror attack on this scale took place in the UK. The worst terror attack in mainland Britain was Al Qaeda's 7/7 attack, which was nowhere near the same scale as 9/11, which had much more in common with the Blitz than it did with the IRA bombings. The government's charges against Hastert, however, thus far have nothing to do with sex and much to do with the no-longer-private, no-longer-secure world of banking. The federal indictment accuses Hastert only of making, and then lying about, bank withdrawals in violation of a relatively-new, almost Orwellian crime called "structuring." Hollywood Blindsided by L.A. Minimum Wage Increase

Los Angeles recently became the largest city in the nation to raise the minimum wage from $9 to $15 an hour. Opponents of the increase have been concerned about the negative economic impact that the wage hike will likely have on L.A. businesses, particularly those that are operating under the dazzling dome of the entertainment capital of the world, Hollywood. L.A. has been experiencing a loss of revenue for a while now, due to the flight of film and television production projects to more business friendly locales across the U.S. and to other countries such as Canada, where lower taxes and reduced regulations beckon studios. The escalation in the cost of goods and services in Los Angeles will put the city at a significant disadvantage relative to its business rivals in competing locations, and as a result L.A. stands to lose even more of its historic local production. People of Honor and Integrity Need Not Apply

It seems like the more I do stories about our institutions of higher learning, the more I come to the conclusion that there are no real standards for those teaching our young people. You may need a degree in order to teach, but that’s about all; honor and integrity are no longer required. My home state of Massachusetts shows that no matter how bad one’s character is, as long as they have a degree and are flaming liberals, they're in. Boston University first realized they had an issue with incoming sociology Professor Saida Grundy when a Tweet she sent out was brought to the administration’s attention: "White male college students are a 'problem population'" and "white masculinity is THE problem for America's colleges." She is a black college professor, not that that should matter. As a professor, she is supposed to have open dialogue with her students. Can you imagine if a white college professor Tweeted "Black male college students are a problem population and their entitlement mindset is a MAJOR problem for American colleges"? One way to avoid losing money is to diversify, and not just in the type of stocks you own. I am invested in the stock market, real estate, and many different businesses. Even within my different investments, I maintain diversity. Whether you choose to invest in yourself through your business or in the market through an advisor, be sure to trust but verify. You should be able to have complete confidence in either your advisor’s expertise or in your own knowledge about the workings of your business. After all, the only way to combat uncertainty in your investments is to have a good understanding of your markets and spread out your assets. All routes of investment have great potential for success, but no one investment is worth the risk of losing everything, however lucrative it may seem. Clooney's Preachy "Tomorrowland" Tanks at the Box Office

Despite the fact that Disney's latest film "Tomorrowland" cost $190 million to make, was cleverly marketed, had a coveted Memorial Day weekend release date, and counts among its cast members major A-lister George Clooney, the environmentally correct movie has turned out to be a debut dud.

Falling far short of its Hollywood expectations, the film managed to garner only $33 million in its three-day opening and disappointedly took in a lower than expected $40 million over the four-day holiday span, barely edging out "Pitch Perfect 2" in its second high-note week. "Tomorrowland" received a below par "B" rating from CinemaScore. Now Disney finds itself in the position of having to rely on robust international receipts to recoup its massive investment. On this Memorial Day, we remember our fallen heroes along with Eric Blehm who has dedicated his career to telling the stories that honor the legacies of those who serve. In LEGEND, acclaimed bestselling author Eric Blehm takes as his canvas the Vietnam War, as seen through a single mission that occurred on May 2, 1968. A twelve-man Special Forces team had been covertly inserted into a small clearing in the jungles of neutral Cambodia where U.S. forces were forbidden to operate. Their objective, just miles over the Vietnam border, was to collect evidence that proved the North Vietnamese Army was using the Cambodian sanctuary as a major conduit for supplying troops and material to the south via the Ho Chi Minh Trail. What the team didn't know was that they had infiltrated a section of jungle that concealed a major enemy base. Soon they found themselves surrounded by hundreds of NVA, under attack, low on ammunition, stacking the bodies of the dead as cover in a desperate attempt to survive the onslaught. When Special Forces Staff Sergeant Roy Benavidez heard the distress call, he jumped aboard the next helicopter bound for the combat zone without hesitation.

What followed would become legend in the Special Operations community. Flown into the foray of battle by the courageous pilots and crew of the 240th Assault Helicopter Company, Benavidez jumped from the hovering aircraft and ran nearly 100 yards through enemy fire. Despite being immediately and severely wounded, Benavidez reached the perimeter of the decimated team, provided medical care, and proceeded to organize an extraordinary defense and rescue. During the hours-long battle, he was bayoneted, shot, and hit by grenade shrapnel more than thirty times, yet he refused to abandon his efforts until every survivor was out of harm's way.

The case was reopened thirteen years later, in 1980, when a long lost - and believed dead - Green Beret eyewitness whom Benavidez had rescued that day, came forth and wrote a statement that revealed, once and for all, what happened on that fateful day in May of 1968.
