As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 fast approaches, we must revisit the possibility of another attack. Our nation's major metropolitan areas have detailed community response plans for hurricanes, forest fires, and other natural disasters. But in my decades in the field, I have noticed a worrisome gap: pre-disaster community planning for a nuclear event such as a terrorist plot. To fill several gaps in our current level of readiness, the federal government's old civil defense plans, terminated in 1994, need to be resurrected and modernized. Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) classes, overseen by FEMA, need to be mandatory in schools. Depending on community voluntary participation is not nearly enough. [more...]

Supreme Court Just Gave Mail-In Ballot Safeguards a Chance

The Supreme Court's decision to stay the injunction blocking President Trump's March executive order on mail-in ballots gives voters something they are clamoring for: greater confidence in election integrity. A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that, by a 52% to 34% margin, likely voters say the government has not done enough to prevent election cheating. Even more striking, voters say by nearly two to one that widespread cheating is likely to affect the outcome of this fall's congressional elections. After Canada Impasse, Mexico Quietly Left Washington Empty Handed, But Reiterates Section 232 Tariff Goals

Mexico's top trade diplomat, Marcelo Ebrard, was in Washington for several days last week [from Aug. 24 to Aug. 26] but quietly left empty-handed on Wednesday. Ebrard's trip followed the now infamous Canada trade impasse. Despite that very public blow up in negotiations, Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum said last weekend, prior to Ebrard's visit, that she was "optimistic" of a deal and reiterated that Mexico's goal is also to lower the Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and automotive. Just like Canada. The concern for many in the U.S. was if Mexico would get a similar tariff reprieve offered to the Canadians. USTR has long labeled Mexico as the easier trading partner, while Canada has decisively been labeled the more belligerent, with Trump calling them "nasty" – a term he has never used to describe the Mexican side. L.A. Media Expert Calls Officials "Insane" Over Street-Food Health Hazards

There is a disturbing report detailing thousands of public health complaints involving street-food vendors across Los Angeles County. According to the California Post, a previously unreleased 662-page government dossier contains 9,746 complaints filed between 2023 and early 2026. The allegations reportedly include a dog eating meat from a vendor's bag before it was served, cockroaches crawling from a food truck, mice near open salsa, raw meat sitting unrefrigerated in the heat, and people urinating around cooking equipment. These complaints describe conditions that sound less like a major American city and more like a public-health nightmare. Yet officials who know about these dangers appear unwilling to act. And I can't think of any endorsement worse than the one that Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is Jewish and said that she couldn't attend the state Dem convention because of fears for her safety, just offered Abdul El-Sayed and her party at the Michigan Jewish Democratic Convention.
